Apart from being difficult to source wide mouth containers, it is generally a very expensive exercise to transport what are typically large containers, from point of manufacture to place of use. It is estimated that for every container of wide-mouth preforms, the equivalent in blown containers would be between 7-10 containers, dependent on size. Clearly purchasing and transporting wide mouth containers is a very inefficient business, which is why some 5 years ago IPR came up with the idea of hole-in-the-wall manufacturing.
This typically entails buying in the preforms and blow moulding the containers on site at the head of a filling line. Aside from the savings in transport and reduced carbon front-print, the in-house blow moulding option also reduces other costs associated with storage and packaging waste, and in general one can consider an overall saving of between 20-35%.
IPR works out a simple supply & manufacture strategy with the customer, which typically involves us specifying and supplying the correct blow moulding system for the user – this includes blow moulding machine, moulds, compressors, and training. The customer would pay down approximately 25% of the capital outlay of the equipment and the balance would be amortised against preform purchase agreement or a rental on a cost per 1000 basis. Thus for a modest outlay the customer can benefit from reduced container costs, and significantly better flexibility and logistics.
